Order of Culture（文化勲章）
Official decoration awarded annually to honor individuals who have made a significant contribution to the developments of the arts and sciences. The Order of Culture does not have rankings. Recipients usually number four or five each year, in fields of endeavor ranging from the natural sciences and medicine to literature,the fine arts ,music ,drama,architecture,and scholarly research. The Order of Culture was first established in 1937, in an effort to encourage and foster greater originality and creativity in the cultural sphere. Since 1949 it has been awarded annually on Culture Day(11/3). Recipients of the award are selected by the cabinet merit (bunka ko:ro:sya) chosen by the minister of education and recommended to the prime minister.
