Japan Academy (Nihon Gakushiin)

The preeminent learned society of Japan,established in 1879 to honor scholars who have made outstanding contributions to their fields of study. Election to the academy is considered the highest distinction a Japanese scholar can receive. Academicians enjoy life tenure and a yearly stipend. The Academy awards two annual prizes_the Academy Prize(Gakushiin Sho:)and the Imperial Prize(Gakushiin Onshi Sho:)_for important sholarly work and publishes Gakushiin kiyo:(Proceedings of the Japan Academy)
